Policy
To promote consistency, professionalism, and inclusivity in our product offerings, Dining Services products may not be named after any individual, department, team, group, committee, organization, or similar entity.
Product names should instead reflect the product’s ingredients, characteristics, theme, or other neutral and broadly applicable concepts. This policy applies to all new products and product names developed or approved by Dining Services.
Product Packaging
For large or special orders, a department or group’s logo may be included on product packaging with prior approval from the department or group's dean or vice president as well as the Dining Services Managing Director. This exception applies only to packaging and does not permit the product itself to be named after the department, group, or other entity.
Procedure
When an area is developing a new recipe or product, the following process should be used to select and approve the product name:
1. Select a Proposed Name
The area developing the product should select a proposed name that complies with the Product Naming Policy. The name should not reference or be named after an individual, department, team, group, committee, organization, or similar entity.
2. Submit for Review
Before the product name is finalized or used publicly, the proposed name should be presented to the Dining Services Executive Team and Managing Director for review.
3. Receive Approval
The product name must receive approval from the Executive Team and Managing Director before it is finalized or used in signage, menus, packaging, marketing materials, or other public-facing applications.
If a proposed name is not approved, the area should select an alternative name and resubmit it for review.
