Overtime Policy

Policy

Hourly employees may not work over 40 hours per week unless authorized by their department manager and recorded using a Workday overtime request when needed to meet critical operational needs. Authorization for overtime must be given before that time is worked and only on an exception basis. It is illegal for an hourly employee to “donate” extra time in their regular job assignment (see BYU’s Staff Overtime Policy).

Exempt full-time staff employees do not report time worked and therefore do not qualify for overtime. The general university expectation is that these employees “work in accordance with standard operating hours and as needed in the completion of all assignments, special projects, and customer needs” (see BYU’s Workweek for Employees Procedures). Hours worked may vary from week to week, but BYU Dining Services endeavors to protect work-life balance for all employees. If a salaried employee is consistently working exorbitant hours each week, that employee should counsel with their supervisor on how to adjust responsibilities or routines to allow a reduction.
