Dress and Grooming Policy

Policy

All BYU Dining Services employees will follow BYU’s dress and grooming guidelines as outlined in CES Dress and Grooming – Principles & Expectations and in their department’s dress & grooming standards.

Procedures

1. Department Dress & Grooming Standards
Department managers will establish department dress and grooming standards for employees that (1) are consistent with BYU and Dining Services policies and (2) define additional standards in the following areas:

  • Regulatory requirements that apply to the work or nature of the department/position (ex: hair net, closed-toed shoes, stud piercings only, etc.).
  • For employees with a uniform, standards for maintaining image/brand (ex: franchise uniform requirements). These should include the requirement that men’s hair be cut short (unless the employee has a cultural exemption from the Honor Code office).
  • All team members are expected to maintain their uniforms in a clean, well-kept condition at all times. Uniforms should be free of stains, odors, excessive wrinkles, or visible damage. The overall appearance should reflect professionalism and uphold the image of our department.
  • Managers are responsible for ensuring that uniforms in their area are properly maintained, presentable for each shift, and aligned with the professional standards of our department. They are also responsible for ensuring that all team members consistently adhere to the department’s dress and grooming policies.

Department dress and grooming standards should be made available in the department employee handbook and department managers are responsible for communicating changes to their employees. When the area changes uniform guidelines, the department manager should work with the Administration Support Manager to update these changes in the branding guide. Links to Dining Services uniform branding guides (with dress and grooming standards) are made available on this policy web page under "Additional Information".

2. Management Training
Dining Services management will provide regular training to department managers on enforcing dress and grooming standards.

3. Laundry Services
Uniforms purchased from BYU Laundry as part of the laundry rental system should always be cleaned by them. Department managers are authorized to offer department-funded laundry services to employees for other uniforms when doing so is in Dining Services’ best interest.
